M.Sc in Microbiology

The Post Graduate Department of Microbiology was started in 2002 with an intake of 30 students. Currently the intake is 60 students. The Department is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Academically the Department has been consistently performing well since its inception. The Department has recorded consistently good results with 100% in 2009 and 2011. In 2007, 2009 and 2011 students secured II, IV and III rank of the University. Students have found placements in Industry and Academia.



About the Course

The M.Sc. Course in Microbiology is designed to equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in industrial microbiology and environmental biotechnology.

The Department has talented faculty members with rich experience in teaching. Mrs. Shobha K. Jayanna is heading the Department. The Faculty provides each student necessary inputs to realize their full potential towards their career development.


The Department has excellent infrastructure. It comprises State-of-the Art laboratories in the areas of Molecular biology, Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Food, Environmental Microbiology and Fermentation technology. These laboratories comprise of equipments such as Fermentor, Shaker incubator and BOD incubator, Colony counters, Centrifuge Spectrophotometers and Binocular Microscopes.

Research Programmes

The Post Graduate students of Microbiology also undertake inhouse research projects. Some of these include: Antibiotic production by soil actinomycetes, Molecular microbiology, control of enteric pathogen that contaminate fresh products, Antimicrobial activity of phytomedicinal plant extracts, Screening of pathogenic organisms from Hospital area, sterility testing of distilled water and normal saline and extraction of single cell proteins. Research projects on bioremediation of heavy metals from industrial effluents and biodiversity studies for exploration of significant microorganisms are also underway.

 The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has identified the Department of Biotechnology, Dayananda Sagar Institutions (DSI) for support under the FIST Programme for 2007 (Fund for Improvement of S & T infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions) Under Level – I Category at a total cost of Rs. 60 lakhs for a period of 5 years.


For a research project on “High Volume micropropogation / refinement of protocols for selected Bamboo species”, Rs. 27.55 Lakhs has been sanctioned.

This is a 2-year full time Post Graduate Program in Microbiology, which is affiliated to Bangalore University. The admission is open to Science Graduates from all recognized universities provided they satisfy the minimum requirements laid down by the University.
