Manufacturing
is on the upswing in India due to competitive
labour and material costs, availability of technically
qualified manpower and familiarity with English
language. For example presently India manufactures
almost 1 lakh cars per month, 5 lakh two wheelers
per month, which is 10 times more than what
was manufactured 15 years ago. Leading automobile
manufacturers like Toyota, Daimler Chrysler,
General Motors started operations in India and
focusing on making India as nodal export point.
Software development activity, used very commonly
in automobiles for design and analysis purposes,
is being shifted to India taking advantage of
our strengths in software development. For example
Delphi Automotives, General Motors, Delmiya
that are large MNCs are presently operating
from Bangalore. Civil Aviation in India is poised
for rapid expansion in the next few years, with
several new private operators entering the field.
Maintenance of civil aircraft would open up
considerable challenges and opportunities to
Mechanical Engineers.

of Mechanical Engineering was started in the
year 1979. Over the years it has grown into
a full-fledged Department offering undergraduate
and Post Graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering.
It has so far graduated more than 2500 Mechanical
Engineers who are contributing significantly
to the development and running of various public
and private organizations in India and abroad
in the fields of Academics, Research, Industrial
and Social sector.
DEPARTMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Department of Mechanical Engineering
has an advisory council, having members from
teaching and industry / research organizations.
The council meets at least once in a semester
to review and evaluate performance of the department
and offer advice in needed areas.

(b) Students
500 undergraduate students are on rolls in the
current academic year 2004-2005. 100 percent results
has been achieved in the final year examinations
in the last two years owing to the sincere, dedicated
and concentrated efforts of faculty members
TEACHING-LEARNING
PROCESS
The college arranges
for technical field visits in conformity with
the curriculumThe faculty and students have
access to EDUSAT, a distance-learning programme
– an initiative of the VTU, Belgaum. The
faculty can access and browse textbooks and
journals through DELNET and J-GATE, an open
source for information promoted by the UGC and
Ministry of Education, New Delhi. The faculty
and students have unlimited and free access
to INTERNET through the college Internet browsing
centre. All these including representative Mechanical
Engineering models available in the department
contribute to the effective teaching-learning-
process
COMPUTER CENTERS
/ INTERNET / SIS:
There is a centralized
computer centre with a large number of computers
with Internet facilities. Students have full
access to the centre for their development and
access to information. A well-developed Student
Information System (SIS) is in place, where
the faculty enters all the information with
reference to student performance and attendance
regularly enabling parents to monitor progress
of their wards online.
STUDENT COUNSELLING
– PROCTORIAL SYSTEM
The department
has a well-designed proctorial system in tune
with the institution policy. Students are grouped
in batches and a proctor is assigned to look
after their progress. The proctors interact
continuously with the assigned students, monitor
their progress & development based on feed
back from the concerned faculty on aspects like:
attendance, performance in tests and examinations.
Alumni interaction:
Alumni meetings
are organized in the college at periodic intervals.
Response has been encouraging as seen from the
active participation of our former students.
Efforts are on to connect other mechanical engineering
alumni and explore greater interaction.
Quality admissions:
Quality of Admissions
can be by the gauged from ranks obtained in
the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by
Government of Karnataka. Students between top
17 % to 35 % of CET rankings have been seeking
admission to the department in the general category.
100% Results
Faculty take
extra care in the students and the knowledge
delivery process throughout the course period.
These dedicated and concentrated efforts have
culminated in obtaining 100 percent results
in the final year for the department. During
the last two years, all the students completed
the B.E. degree course with distinction securing
more than seventy percent of the total marks.
A very large number of Final year students have
secured first class with distinction (FCD) in
the VTU examinations held during May 2004. The
goal is now to be in tune with this trend and
achieve top honours at the university level

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Formalities for
obtaining recognition of the department also
as an R & D centre is through, facilitating
opening up avenues for conducting basic and
applied research. Two doctoral degree holders
and three members of the faculty working for
their doctoral degree are engaged in research,
indicating the scientific temper that exists
in the department.
The department has established contacts with
NAL, Bangalore to undertake Post-graduate project
works in the fields of wind turbines and composite
leaf springs. It is planned to establish research
facilities to validate theoretical results with
experimentation in the fields of Metal Matrix
composites, Flow over blades, Effect of Reynold’s
number on the performance of blades etc. Currently,
the department has installed advanced software
package NASTRON to carry out analytical studies.
