The Department
of Computer Science Engineering (CSE) was established
in 1986 and has grown exponentially over the
last few years, evolving to meet demands of
the 21st century.
Why is Computer
Science Engineering so popular?
This is an emerging
and powerful branch of Engineering, which has
the tremendous advantage of abstraction and
flexibility. These two combined with the power
of processors has made this discipline an indispensable
ingredient, in state of the art equipment across
all fields.
Professionals from other engineering and technology
domains harness the power and flexibility provided
by computers. As a result this branch encompasses
all the domains and is much sought after.
The Courses
The department
offers BE in CSE as an undergraduate program,
which is an eight-semester course. M.Tech: Net
Working can be taken as a specialisation in
the postgraduate course. The PG course is spread
over four semesters, as per the Visvesvaraya
Technology University (VTU) syllabus, which
is revised from time to time to align itself
to the changing needs of the industry.
In keeping
with the current trends
Some of the additions
made in the courses by VTU include subjects
like Engineering Management, Software Practices
and Testing, C# and .Net, Web commerce, Internet
Programming to name a few are offered to the
Computer Science students. Augmentation courses
are designed and delivered to students, which
enable them to be in tune with new trends. in
the department. A common practice adopted across
all streams of Engineering.
Alliances:
The department
has academic alliances with NIIT and IBM that
enable courses like C, C++ and J2EE to be offered
to students.
Industry experts from software companies are
invited for seminars/interactive sessions with
students. These sessions provide much needed
exposure to new developments in industry. Seminars
on “Firewalls” by Ms Bhavani and
Ms Anjana from Novell Software, Principles of
Software Testing by Mr Srinivas Desikan from
Siebel on Career Courses by IBM representatives
were well received by the students.
Department
Strengths
A beautiful undulating
landscape is put to optimum use. A well-stocked
library, state of the art infrastructure and
committed faculty guide the students to achieve
overall excellence.
Academic
Placement
An excellent record
of academic results ensure that reputed companies
like Wipro, Infosys, HP and other bigger companies
visit the camps on a regular basis year after
year with full placements happening during pre
final stages. Students get plenty of opportunities
to participate in Quiz and essay competitions,
held by the college as well as to represent
the college, in other prestigious institutes.
Students are sent to visit IT exhibitions/ expos.
Later they write reports about these visits
which are published in the department newsletter.
Creativity:
Students have developed
their own web-site to consolidate all the important
events and data like results and attendance
in one place. Students contribute articles to
the dept newsletter and post them later on the
web site, which is also a good platform for
interaction. The Department also has a site
which gives information about the various aspects
like syllabus, projects and seminars conducted.
Network Lab
Workshop:
Curricular activities
include workshops conducted from time to time
like Entrepreneur Development and Network Lab
Workshop was organised for the benefit of Computer
Engineering faculty of VTU. The department faculty
played a major role in designing and implementation
of the lab syllabus. The response was overwhelming.
Over 200 faculty members from all over Karnataka
State attended and took active part in the workshop.
Faculty
The department
has a large number of dedicated and versatile
faculty. The details about the faculty are available
in the individual profiles presented separately.
Faculty is a good mix of researchers, academicians
and individual expertise. A proctor system is
in place with each faculty member, who acts
as mentor/ guide for that group.
Every effort is made to deliver the best education
to students so as to meet the needs of the software
industry. All the faculty members share any
new findings or information and discuss on various
points amongst themselves, to improve the quality
of teaching learning process. Students’
feedback is also taken at regular intervals
and incorporated appropriately.
Imparting good social values along with academic
excellence; through counselling and close interaction
with students from the faculty ensure the right
grooming of a student. Senior students act as
a guide and offer good leadership to fresher.
Interaction
with Parents and Alumni
On a regular basis
meetings are held with the parents, to discuss
their ward’s progress and any other issues
they might have. Responses from parents at these
meetings is overwhelming; many offering their
expertise, some contributing books to the department
library, others willing to give time and a few
raising resources to provide for the needs of
the department. Regular meets with the alumni
supplement these efforts. The college, as a
matter of practice, encourages employing its
alumni as faculty and; the department has currently
two alumni as its faculty on its rolls.
Research
Initiatives
Being a multidisciplinary
higher education centre, specialities like Dentistry,
Pharmacy, Polytechnic, Nursing and Engineering
along with other specialities functioning alongside,
interdisciplinary research becomes that much
easy. Sophisticated facilities are nearing completion
and there is going to be a very powerful initiative
towards research in the campus. Needless to
say software will always have a major role to
play.
Faculty development
Several of the
faculty members have registered for Ph D and
they will be contributing actively to the frontiers
of Software Technology. Faculty members have
presented Papers in both National and International
events/conferences, more details of which can
be seen in their respective profiles.
Alliances
with industry
Seminars organised
by Sun, Intel, Microsoft, Linux, QSIT were attended
by students and staff of the department.
NIIT and IBM working with the college make it
possible to offer augmentation courses to our
students. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with Linux Learning Centre and QSIT –
quality consulting enables Software Development
and Testing Training.
These efforts will lead DSCE to significantly
contribute to the emerging technology of the
future.
About the
department
Transparency is
maintained in the working of the department.
Standard, constructive rules and procedures
are followed in day-to-day operations. The department
head is freely accessible to students and faculty
members for consultation, sharing of new ideas,
and general guidance. A high degree of team
spirit is developed and sustained in the department.
